Glass, steel, concrete

40cm h x 15 cm w x 40 cm d

This work is a direct response to the physical, mental and emotional experience of the urban landscape of Plymouth city centre, with its predominantly glass, steel and concrete structures.

It focuses on tension, balance and composition. Starting with the simple cuboid form and architectural inspiration, the work consists of three elements made from different materials, with different shapes and visual density. It is an attempt to create something that reflects both the energetic and hostile nature of the built environment.

The lines are clean and simple, also echoing modern city architecture, but the curved, flat steel bar, angled concrete base and truncated glass pyramid disrupt the sense of order inherent in a city. The movement and energy created by the angles, curve and toppling, downward-facing pyramid, creates a rhythm and balance as the eye moves around the piece.
